But it’s short-sighted to think that we’re getting people’s best when we expect such a limited version of who they are to show up. Adjusting your own mindset to be a human and show some genuine care to your team members is hard. But you can do it!
It can be difficult getting your team members to feel comfortable being humans at work; if you’re not used to it, imagine they won’t be either. And until they’re seeing a consistent example of it from you, you can bet they won’t take that gamble themselves.
You might get lucky, sometimes it might go overwhelmingly well! No matter which way it’s going, throughout the process, it’s important to:
- Trust your team members’ experiences
- Remember that self-awareness is a journey, and
- Leave room for conversation
