As leaders, we must recognize that people come into our circles with widely different experiences from our own. Individuals who have been marginalized, mistreated, or excluded may begin a relationship very differently than those whose experiences have not included such. Therefore, levels of trust will vary widely. We all arrive at different versions of ground zero based on our backgrounds and experiences. Different people with different experiences are going to approach trust differently.

Why is this important? Because you’re going to have to be in this for the long haul. Becoming an effective leader who excellently cares for your team members does not happen overnight, and does not happen in a vacuum. It’s a partnership, and those take time. You may have to come back time, and time, and time again with the same genuineness, the same care, the same love for it to start to hit home for the unique individuals on your team. Set your expectations so that you don’t get discouraged along the way.

So, how do you show genuine care at work? One excellent way is to:

Ask questions.

And as you ask, you must:

  • Listen
  • BELIEVE
  • Follow up, and
  • Support

This is where the One-on-One comes in!
The One-on-One is a manager’s most powerful tool to improve the employee experience. It works for managers with direct reports, as well as others…
